Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism | Bait Al Oud

UAE

The Department of Culture and Tourism regulates, develops and promotes the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as an inspired global destination, rich in cultural authenticity, diverse natural offerings and unparalleled family leisure and entertainment attractions.  Its aim is to support Abu Dhabi’s evolution into a world-class, sustainable destination of distinction.

In alignment with the core tenets of Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and the Abu Dhabi Plan, we contribute to the nation’s economic diversification, working closely with stakeholders and partners to market Abu Dhabi locally and internationally.  Through a combination of activities that engage our stakeholders, we are able to nurture a cultured community that preserves heritage and values, attract national and international investments by marketing our key tourism segments, increase visitor numbers, and stimulate growth by building an attractive yet distinctive tourism and cultural destination.

Bait Al Oud is dedicated to the preservation, study, and teaching of the oud and continuation of the songs and techniques associated with it. Established in 2008, the musical facility has since played a key role in preserving and sharing the understanding of Arabic musical instruments, and in overseeing their return to the forefront of the contemporary music scene.  It also offers music lessons in these instruments and runs certificate-awarding courses.

The oud is one of mankind’s oldest stringed instruments, dating back to the Akkadian Empire in ancient Mesopotamia, which is now modern-day Iraq.  As a center of both teaching and research, Bait Al Oud teaches oud making to continue the tradition of crafting ouds by hand and engages in outreach to spread awareness and appreciation of the oud and other Arabic musical instruments.
